Ben Tynan’s enigmatic personality and 100 percent finishing rate are sure to see him become a ONE Championship fan favorite.
Born in Fort McMurray, Canada, “Vanilla Thunder” grew up as the youngest of five siblings in a tight-knit, loving family. His father — a northern Canadian — had met his Hawaii-raised mother while on vacation and convinced her to trade island warmth for the far north, where they put down roots and raised their children.
Tynan lost his father at a young age, so he was raised by his mother and older siblings. Though money and circumstances were never easy, the close bonds in his household shaped him, and the rough-and-tumble dynamic of a big family toughened him early. He has always felt drawn to combat, crediting both his father’s fighting spirit and the pop-culture heroes of his youth for pulling him toward the sport.
During his childhood and adolescence, his vibrant personality shone through on the playground. Tynan made many friends, had a massive Pokémon card collection, and later grew up on bands like The Used.
Wrestling entered the picture through his oldest brother, Bruce, his role model and father figure. When the family relocated to Seattle and Bruce took up the sport in high school, Tynan followed – despite coming from a track-and-field family rather than a wrestling one. A self-described “late bloomer,” he didn’t start until seventh grade and weighed barely over 100 pounds, but he stuck with it for the love of the grind.
That perseverance paid off. After a growth spurt in his junior year pushed him past six feet, Tynan’s game finally clicked. He became a Canadian Junior Freestyle National Champion and went on to qualify for the prestigious NCAA Division I National Championships after making the move to North Dakota State University.
Tynan’s extensive wrestling background has been pivotal to his MMA career, as he has used his grappling prowess to defeat all of his opponents in the amateur and professional ranks. His interest in the sport first sparked in college, where two of his wrestling coaches competed as professional mixed martial artists and introduced him to striking.
But the Canadian isn’t a one-trick pony. With a competitive background in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, submission grappling, and kickboxing, Tynan has developed a well-rounded mixed martial arts repertoire that he has carried with him into the world’s largest martial arts organization.
Now, with his blend of elite grappling, growing striking, and natural charisma, “Vanilla Thunder” has his sights set on climbing the heavyweight ranks and chasing World Title gold.
