Amir Khan predicted a first-round finish at ONE CHAMPIONSHIP: SHANGHAI, and that is exactly what he delivered. He registered a devastating knockout to Jaroslav Jartim in their lightweight showdown on Saturday, 2 September, at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center.
The 22-year-old Singaporean added another highlight reel finish to his record, landing a right hand that absolutely demolished Jartim in the opening round. With that, he extends his record for the most knockouts and finishes in ONE Championship history at seven and eight respectively.
Khan got the action started early with a lightning-quick left hand that came straight down the pipe, landing flush on Jartim, and sending a message to the 24-year-old Czech athlete that this was going to be a long night for him if the match remained on the feet.
Despite his prowess as a knockout artist, the Evolve MMA product actually rushed forward and looked for a pair of takedowns before taking Jartim’s back on the ground. Khan got his hooks in while looking for the rear-naked choke, but he could not quite lock up the submission, as Jartim defended well while doing his best to slip free. Rather than give up position on the mat, the Singaporean just worked back to the feet before releasing the hold and resetting himself.
From there, it was all Khan, as he uncorked a beautiful left high kick that set the finish in motion. After Jartim was sent reeling from the kick, the Singaporean saw the perfect opening to launch a right hand right into his opponent’s jaw. With that, Jartim was completely done, as the referee stepped in at 3:46 of the first round.
“I was just trying to feel him out in the first (round). Me and my coaches just drilled that [combination] backstage five minutes ago,” Khan said after the win.
The knockout not only helped Khan maintain a perfect finishing rate, but it moved him to 5-0 in his past five bouts in ONE Championship, with every one of those victories coming by way of knockout or submission. Khan is now 8-2.
After his latest highlight reel finish, he wasted no time in calling for his next opponent.
“I’m coming for the [ONE Lightweight World Championship] belt,” Khan declared. “Give me (Eduard) Folayang or Ev Ting.”
