Pakistan Submission Grappling Champion Waqar Umar originally came from a wushu background, but proved to be a prodigiously fast learner when it came to the ground game, winning his first three bouts by submission to earn a prestigious place on the global stage of ONE Championship.
He made his ONE Championship debut as a late replacement in March 2014, moving up a division to take on Malaysian star Peter Davis. There, Umar gave the seasoned lightweight plenty of problems in a highly entertaining affair, but ultimately fell short.
Training under Pakistani pioneer Bashir Ahmad, Umar now competes as a featherweight, and is already a multi-bout veteran against the world’s best martial artists. Recently, he scored the biggest win of his career, defeating top Chinese talent Zhao Zhi Kang via submission in Bangkok.
