Some of the most remarkable finishes happen when a highly skilled warrior surprises an opponent with a stunning submission.

It is astonishing to watch an athlete systematically perform a series of technical moves to secure a complex hold, and force their adversary to quit. The only thing making the act even more impressive is performing the technique at lightning speed.

Now, only a week removed from a pair of quick knockout stoppages, we revisit some of the fastest submission finishes in the promotion’s history.

After suffering his first promotional loss in May 2015, Ev Tinglooked to make a statement in his return. The Malaysian met former ONE Featherweight World Champion Honorio “The Rock” Banaro at ONE: TIGERS OF ASIA later that October, and “E.T.” proved to be the fiercer tiger.

In the opening frame, Banario shot for a quick takedown, and even attempted to take his rival’s back. Ting shook him off, however, and created some space to strike.

Almost immediately, “The Rock” attempted a second takedown, but this time, Ting went on the offensive. He locked in a deep guillotine choke, and then rolled into mount and trapped the Filipino’s arm. Banario tapped just 56 seconds into the contest, giving the Malaysian the fastest submission finish in a ONE catch weight bout.

Ting looks to continue his winning ways in the lightweight division later this month, as he is scheduled to meet Ariel Sexton at ONE: QUEST FOR GOLD.

Alex Silva Against Hayato Suzuki

A spectacular submission win that secured him a shot at the ONE Strawweight World Title. The rest is history.

Alex “Little Rock” Silva capped off an unforgettable 2017 by winning the ONE Strawweight World Championship in December. However, it was the Singapore-based Brazilian’s incredible effort against previously-unbeaten contender Hayato Suzuki from a month earlier at ONE: LEGENDS OF THE WORLD which earned him the title opportunity.

Moments after the opening bell sounded, Suzuki scored a beautiful double leg takedown and landed in Silva’s guard. The Japanese grappler pressured him against the cage, but “Little Rock” slickly used his legs to create some space as he threw up a helicopter armbar attempt, and then beautifully transitioned to secure a straight armbar.

Overall, it took 82 seconds for Suzuki to tap. That earned Silva a world title shot, a place in ONE’s record books for the fastest submission victory in ONE strawweight history, and the Submission of the Year Award for 2017.

Ben Askren Against Agilan Thani

A true master on the mat.

Agilan “Alligator” Thani had grand plans of defeating ONE Welterweight World Champion Ben Askren at ONE: DYNASTY OF HEROES in May 2017, but it was the American Olympic wrestler who turned the tables on his previously-unbeaten Malaysian foe.

“Funky” wasted no time in deploying his strategy, as he immediately secured a takedown, and then transitioned from position to position. He trapped Thani in a crucifix, and proceeded to land punch after punch.

The battered Malaysian momentarily escaped and made it back to his feet, but the former Olympian used his world-class wrestling to score another takedown. Soon thereafter, Askren secured an arm-triangle choke, and rotated until Thani submitted at the 2:20 mark of the first round.

That effort was good enough to immortalize Askren with the quickest submission win in ONE’s welterweight division.

“The Southern Eagle” Ma Hao Bin has emerged as a contender in ONE’s stacked flyweight division, but his illustrious career actually started in the bantamweight division in January 2016 at ONE: DYNASTY OF CHAMPIONS (CHANGSHA)

Ma faced Wu Ting Shen in the semifinal of the ONE Changsha Bantamweight Tournament, and he immediately displayed the grappling prowess that earned him a China national freestyle wrestling title.

He slid under Wu’s punch, brought him down with a single leg takedown, and quickly took control of his back. Wu desperately tried to scramble out of the bad position, but left his neck exposed. Ma took full advantage of that by sinking in a deep guillotine to force the tap at 27 seconds.

Not only did “The Southern Eagle” achieve victory in his first ONE appearance, but he also set the record for the fastest submission win in the bantamweight division.
