Five Essential Singapore Experiences According To Angela Lee
Singapore is the place to be this weekend. ONE Championship is staying home to hold its biggest event of the year, ONE: DEFENDING HONOR, on Friday Night, 11 November, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
If you flew in just to catch the blockbuster event live, take the opportunity to experience the cosmopolitan city ahead of all the action. “The Lion City” has a vibrant culture and marvelous sights to behold, and is constantly rated as a top vacation destination.
That said, here are five things to experience in lovely Singapore according to ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion Angela Lee, who proudly fights representing the country.
#1 Train At Evolve
With Lumpinee Stadium Champs, ADCC Submission Wrestling Champs, and Olympic wrestlers teaching classes, fighters and everyday people alike are getting a world class workout at the immensely welcoming gym.
“Evolve MMA is definitely number one on the list because who would not want the opportunity to train with numerous world champions in different martial arts disciplines?” Lee asks out loud. “Evolve MMA has top-of-the-line facilities and three convenient locations around Singapore.”
Trust the champ. She knows and she has trained at them all.
#2 Dine At A Hawker Centre
Hawker centres, or the local food markets, are a cultural epicenter in many Asian towns.
It just so happens that Singapore is one of the most multi-cultural cities on the planet, so what makes their markets especially unique is the food selection. The dishes are influenced from countries all over the world. Literally, there is something for everyone.
“Singapore is a food haven! Hawker Centres are the perfect place to go to sample the local cuisine,” Lee says. “Some of my must-have dishes are Hainanese Chicken Rice, BBQ Chicken Wings, Chili Crab, Roti Prata, Laksa, Hae Mee (Prawn Noodle Soup), Bak Kut Teh, Mee Pok, and Ice Kachang for dessert!”
#3 Shop At Orchard Road And Bugis Street
Orchard Road and Bugis Street are two areas known for their retail stores, restaurants, and lively entertainment. For the most dedicated shopper, heading to these two boulevards with a pocket full of a cash is a must.
“Take a walk down the famous Orchard Road, where you will find multiple malls and countless name brand stores,” Lee says. “If you are on a budget, Bugis Street is the perfect place to go for bargains and good deals!”
Plus, there is even more incentive to visit Orchard Road. The day after ONE: DEFENDING HONOR on 12 November, the road will be illuminated as part of its annual Christmas light-up celebration. This is absolutely perfect timing.
#4 Peruse Marina Bay And Its Attractions
One of the crown jewels of Singapore is Marina Bay.
The stunning bay, which is bound by the Downtown Core, Marina East, Marina South, and Straits View, is a centerpiece of the city where people can take in its gorgeous views. Tourists will also be able to take a boat tour, relax near the waterfront, or even visit iconi destinations such as The Merlion and the Sands Skypark.
As Lee indicates, the possibilities are almost endless.
“There are so many activities you can do at Marina Bay,” she exclaims. “Some of my favorites are walking through Gardens By The Bay, taking the Singapore river cruise, and hanging out at the Marina Bay Waterfront where you can find places to eat and watch the light show at night.”
#5 The Nightlife Of Clarke Quay
Marina Bay is not the only body of water that deserves attention in the Lion City. Clarke Quay needs some love, too!
Situated along the Singapore River, the historical Clarke Quay now boasts some of the town’s best restaurants, museums, and pubs. Nearby is Fort Canning Park, which is a massive 18 hectares full of greenery nestled within the city. The area is also known for its nightlife.
“Clarke Quay is one of my favorite places to hang out,” Lee admits. “The nightlife is crazy, with tons of restaurants, clubs, bars and entertainment. Definitely check out the reverse bungee ride and the awesome karaoke bars!”
Plus, the official ONE: DEFENDING HONOR Face-Off will also take place at the central Clarke Quay Fountain Square, so head on down to soak in the atmosphere before the big night of fights.
