Lapicus got off to a fast start in this lightweight match as he landed a leg kick and then threw his whole body behind an overhand right which, luckily for “Cobra,” just narrowly missed its target.
It did not take long for the Team Petrosyan standout to get back into his rhythm. He caught Gafurov napping with some more powerful low kicks that made the Russian back up toward the ropes, where he was forced to defend a three-punch combination.
The former World Champion tried to get some respite by shooting for a takedown, but Lapicus countered with a beautiful throw and ended up on his opponent’s back.
From there, he sunk in the bout-ending rear-naked choke. Gafurov had no chance of escape, and the contest was called off with 1:07 on the clock.
The win pushed Lapicus’ record to 14-0 and sent a warning to every athlete in the lightweight division.
