Rodrigues Steps In To Challenge Sundell At ONE Fight Night 14; Buntan Out Due To Family Matter
An intriguing switch has taken place ahead of ONE Fight Night 14: Stamp vs. Ham on Prime Video in U.S. primetime on Friday, September 29.
ONE Women’s Atomweight Muay Thai World Champion Allycia Hellen Rodrigues will now challenge Smilla “The Hurricane” Sundell for the ONE Women’s Strawweight Muay Thai World Title, with top contender Jackie Buntan pulling out of the matchup due to a family matter.
Sundell will be defending her belt for the first time at the Singapore Indoor Stadium after winning it with a dominant performance against Buntan last April.
The Swedish teen phenom then returned to action in a kickboxing battle against Milana Bjelogrlic at ONE Friday Fights 18 this past May, extending her ONE slate to 3-0 with a convincing unanimous decision.
“The Hurricane” was scheduled for a World Title rematch with Buntan at ONE Fight Night 14, but the latter has been forced to withdraw from the contest.
As a result, Rodrigues has stepped up to the challenge in hopes of becoming a two-division queen.
The Brazilian star claimed the atomweight Muay Thai crown when she defeated Stamp Fairtex in her ONE debut, before returning from the birth of her first child with a successful defense against interim titleholder Janet Todd in March.
Rodrigues didn’t miss a beat despite the long layoff, and her World Champion vs. World Champion showdown with Sundell has all the makings of a classic.
This epic clash bolsters an already stacked card, which is headlined by the ONE Interim Women’s Atomweight MMA World Title bout between Stamp Fairtex and Ham Seo Hee.
Among other exciting matchups, Danielle Kelly and Jessa Khan will duke it out for the inaugural ONE Women’s Atomweight Submission Grappling World Title and strawweight MMA queen Xiong Jing Nan will take on Muay Thai phenom Nat “Wondergirl” Jaroonsak in a special rules striking battle.
