Superbon Expects To ‘Dominate’ Marat Grigorian In Rematch For Interim Kickboxing World Title
Thai superstar Superbon Singha Mawynn is on a mission to rule the featherweight kickboxing division once again, and he can take a massive step toward that goal on Friday, April 5.
That evening in Asia primetime, the 33-year-old will battle longtime rival Marat Grigorian for the ONE Interim Featherweight Kickboxing World Title in front of a boisterous home crowd at Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
The pair have clashed twice before. Their first bout took place in 2018 outside of ONE, with the Armenian legend scoring a stunning first-round knockout.
Four years later at ONE X, Superbon earned his revenge and successfully defended his ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Title, getting the better of Grigorian across five action-packed rounds in one of the finest performances of his career.
The Thai would lose his gold to current titleholder Chingiz Allazov in his next fight, but with a highlight-reel stoppage of Tayfun Ozcan last June, he’s earned this shot at the interim crown and a chance to take a 2-1 lead on Grigorian.
Looking back at their past encounters, Superbon told onefc.com that only one of them has evolved into a better fighter:
“I think I have improved more than Marat. He still fights in the same way as our first fight that I lost. He’s strong, but his style is still the same.”
While Superbon might be quick to dismiss his opponent’s skills, Grigorian has looked sharp since losing their last matchup, defeating top contenders Ozcan and Sitthichai Sitsongpeenong and only losing a hard-fought World Title decision to Allazov.
Still, the man from Bangkok says Grigorian is little more than a tough, heavy-handed brawler – a one-dimensional fighter:
“Marat’s strength is his endurance. He can absorb any attack really well. He’s able to keep punching until the final round without running out of gas. If I’m not fit enough, I’ll be no match for him in the long game.
“His weakness is that he only has one weapon: his punches.”
A veteran of 150 combined Muay Thai and kickboxing fights, Superbon simply thinks that his all-around skill set will make the difference in the rubber match on April 5.
He explained:
“What I’m better at than Marat is skills. I have more weapons in my arsenal, such as kicks, knee strikes, punches, and push kicks, while Marat only has punches. That’s why I can dominate him.”
Superbon Targeting Rematch With Chingiz Allazov
If Superbon Singha Mawynn can get past Marat Grigorian at ONE Friday Fights 58, he will claim the ONE Interim Featherweight Kickboxing World Title and set up a World Title unification clash against Chingiz Allazov.
Superbon hasn’t forgotten about his crushing January 2023 knockout loss to “Chinga” and is driven to exact revenge:
“[Winning the interim title] would mean a lot to me because I want to redeem myself against Chingiz. To win this fight is to guarantee that I will have a chance to rematch with him.
“Chingiz was a blemish on my career. I will go back to him and get revenge.”
The Singha Mawynn representative isn’t looking past Grigorian on April 5, but his ultimate goal remains another date with Allazov.
Superbon even admits that he’s more motivated by revenge than claiming the 26 pounds of gold.
He also promises that if he recaptures the featherweight kickboxing crown he once held, he’ll remain an active divisional king:
“If I can become the champion, I won’t run away from anyone. I’m ready to fight with everyone. I’d even rather rematch with Chingiz than get the World Title.”
