Roma looked dangerous from the start, but the flamboyant Wang soon found his rhythm and started to make a mark with sharp punches and kicks through the middle as he took charge of the contest.
The man from Argentina attempted to walk forward and apply pressure to “Golden Boy,” but the Chinese athlete seemed unconcerned with the strikes being thrown his way as he walked through “The Little Big Man’s” punches and connected with powerful shots of his own.
Wang made the breakthrough midway through the round when a thumping push kick to the chest sent Roma down to the mat. Then, when the 34-year-old returned to his feet, the Chinese star sent him straight back down after a flurry of hooks with a minute left in the first round.
The 24-year-old from Henan could sense victory but did not rush in. He patiently waited for the right opportunity, then struck with a perfect counter right hand that put Roma onto his back.
To his great credit, Roma beat the count once again, but Wang would not be denied. The “Golden Boy” landed a big push kick through his rival’s guard and forced him back against the fence, where he was a sitting duck for a barrage of blows.
Nothing came back in response, so referee Atsushi Onari had no choice but to step in and call a stop to the contest at the 2:59 mark of the opening round.
It gave 24-year-old Wang the 24th win of his kickboxing career as he walked out of the arena in Jakarta with a new legion of fans who are sure to follow the talented Chinese striker’s journey in ONE Super Series with great interest.
